Gestational (Pregnancy) Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is a form of ‘ temporary diabetes ‘ with high blood sugar (glucose) levels in pregnant women. GDM incidence is estimated to be 2% to 4%, and this could be even higher among Indian women.

Signs of gestational diabetes include severe hunger, exhaustion/tiredness, and frequent urination, which can be easily ignored at times before a complication occurs.

All pregnant women should be tested to rule out the possibility of diabetes. Once this condition has been diagnosed, remember that the chances of developing gestational diabetes in the next pregnancy are nearly 40% and the risk of developing type II diabetes increases to 50% over the next 20 years.
